The Language through Music group aims to teach key words and concepts through language and Lámh signs in a fun, engaging and motivating way. Children will engage in the session by playing instruments and participating in the songs in their own way. The activities provide an excellent opportunity to not only target their speech and language development, but also their attention and listening, turn-taking and social skills.
This Group is run weekly by our SLTs and OT and focuses on supporting the development of early motor, communication, and social skills within a group setting. Children attend this group alone while their parents watch from a screen in our kitchen. The children in each group are selected based on similar goals and targets and so, must be seen for a SLT/OT consult before attending. Throughout the term, parents are provided with advice and suggestions for activities or strategies to try at home based on the goals being targeted in the group.
Our Occupational Therapist (OT) works with children in early intervention to help them gain the functional skills they require to reach their maximum potential at home, pre-school and in play/social activities.
OT sessions/consults are fun, creative and stimulating for a child’s development and take place in a variety of settings; in our OT gym, OT therapy room and multisensory room. Our OT works closely with parents and other professionals to assess the underlying components which are impacting on a child’s functioning and to identify appropriate strategies to help them.
OT Intervention can address a range of developmental challenges including:
Our Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) work to support children who present with difficulties understanding others and/or with difficulties being understood by others.
Classes: In individual sessions you and your child will attend the session directly with the SLT. In joint sessions, your child will attend sessions with both an SLT and Occupational Therapist at the same time. In group sessions, your child joins a small number of children who present with similar goals. Where appropriate, we can also provide advice to teachers in pre-school.
How it works: We begin by meeting you and your child at our centre to observe your child’s strengths and
challenges, and to discuss what your goals are for your child. From here we offer support through individual, joint or group sessions/consults. Throughout the therapy process, we work with you to understand your child’s
development and will advise on strategies and activities that you can use at home to draw on your child’s strengths
in order to help them to achieve their goals.
Children with Down Syndrome face challenges in muscle development and co-ordination. Physiotherapy is recommended to help develop good posture, good movement patterns and healthy foot alignment.
