Early Intervention Pathway

Introducing Early Intervention Pathway

The first few years of a child’s life are extremely important in their development and help to set the foundation for learning and success. By providing the right supports and interventions during the early years, we can help children with Down Syndrome reach their full potential and build a strong and healthy future.

At the Down Syndrome Centre (DSC), we know that no two children with Down Syndrome are the same and each child will have different strengths and challenges. Your child with Down Syndrome will learn and master new skills but may need more time and support to do so. This is perfectly normal!

The right therapies will help them to develop their mobility, motor skills, communication, social skills, and independence. Support may include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, music therapy, and/or speech and language therapy. It will also include information and support for your family.

It is important to remember that not every child will attend each therapy, or for the same amount of time, and will instead follow a pathway that is tailored to them. This resource provides information to families on what early intervention is and what services we provide at the DSC to support young children during this important stage of life. These services are an optional addition to those already offered by your child’s Children’s Disability Network Team (CDNT). You should always inform your therapist at the DSC if you are receiving a block of therapy from CDNT, and what for, to prevent any unnecessary overlap and so they can recommend the most beneficial next step for your child.

About Early Intervention

What Is Early Intervention?

During the first few years of life, children develop basic skills that lay the foundation for future progress and learning. Children with Down Syndrome typically face delays in certain areas of development, so early intervention can help them reach their developmental milestones and develop those fundamental skills that will help them as they grow. While early intervention can begin any time after birth, starting as early as possible can help you to feel more confident in supporting your child’s development as these services are designed to enhance the way infants and toddlers develop, and to provide parents and families with support and information. Attending early intervention services also enables you to meet families going through similar experiences and build connections.

The Main Goal Of Early Intervention

The main goal of early intervention is to help parents and families understand and meet the developmental needs of their child, and to put into place strategies to support their development. Children learn best when they are having fun and are involved in everyday situations with familiar people in natural environments. This is why most learning occurs at home between visits to professionals and not actually during sessions. Thus, in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for a child with Down Syndrome, it is essential that families and therapists and anyone else important in the child’s life such as carers, childminders or teachers, work together as a team. Therapists are not able to do all the work as they only spend a small amount of time with the child, and while they may be experts in child development, they do not know each child as well as their parents do, and they don’t always initially know what strategies will work best for every child and family. This means that professionals and parents need to combine their knowledge and expertise and work together to find the tools that will best suit the family and help each child to achieve their full potential.

Early Intervention Principles

Early intervention principles also emphasise the importance of parental and familial support and creating connections with others. We know that while raising a child with Down Syndrome is a delight and pleasure in so many ways, it can also come with some challenges. Attending intervention services such as coffee mornings, or groups gives you the chance to not only gain more information about how to support your child, but also allows you to make connections with those going through similar experiences. Additionally, attending other services such as counselling or self-care evenings allows you to check in with yourself and identify what you need in order to support your child to the best of your ability, and remind yourself that anything you are feeling is completely valid and you are not alone!

Early Intervention Services

It is important to remember that early intervention services do not always involve the therapist interacting with each child one to one in the therapy room, the below are all types of early intervention services and can be just as supportive and effective!

Group therapy

parent coaching

coffee mornings

advice clinics

webinars/seminars

Remember it is what you and your family do at home and in your everyday life that will make the biggest difference!

Speech and Language Therapy

Our Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) work to support children who present with difficulties understanding others and/or with difficulties being understood by others.

Classes: In individual sessions you and your child will attend the session directly with the SLT. In joint sessions, your child will attend sessions with both an SLT and Occupational Therapist at the same time. In group sessions, your child joins a small number of children who present with similar goals. Where appropriate, we can also provide advice to teachers in pre-school.

How it works: We begin by meeting you and your child at our centre to observe your child’s strengths and challenges, and to discuss what your goals are for your child. From here, we offer support through individual, joint or group sessions/consults. Throughout the therapy process, we work with you to understand your child’s development and will advise on strategies and activities that you can use at home to draw on your child’s strengths in order to help them to achieve their goals.

Following the initial assessment stage, your child may also attend therapy sessions with the Speech and Language Therapy Assistant (SLTA). These sessions will be directed by your child’s treating SLT, and will aim to further support you and your child in progressing towards their communication goals.

Cost:
€25 per visit for individual or joint, €15 for a group visit or €50 pre-school visit within 15km radius.
