Oddsocks poem from Holy Rosary primary school

We were inundated with wonderful pictures, videos and messages on World Down Syndrome Day last week.

Many schools have an odd socks day to celebrate the occasion.

Down Syndrome Centre staff in Sandyford were particularly touched by something that came to us from a parent whose child attends our centre, and is also lucky enough to also attend Holy Rosary primary school in Firhouse, Dublin.

The caretaker at the school, Austin Smyth, penned a touching poem paying tribute to one of the pupils who wore her odd socks.

We are delighted to share it with you, here.

Can You Hear Me??

Odd socks,

different,

but the same!

A vibrant splash of colour,

please don’t ever change!

We’ve a twinkle in our eye,

though the mornings are a test!

But when we get our groove on,

why,

we’ll wiggle with the best!

The warmest,

cutest smile,

to brighten the gloomiest day,

a high-five for the ages,

to keep your woes at bay!

The words leap out with kindness,

some lost along the way,

but when they’re echoed from the heart,

you know just what she’s trying to say!

An aul pal,

full of character,

and mischief,

too!

With her magical ‘Special Needs’,

maybe she’ll share some,

with me,

and you. . .
